This is the fourth volume in New City Press's translation of Augustine's Anti-Pelagian works. The translations are crisp and clear and written in modern English free of "thees" and "thous." This volume contains a series of letters and short treatises Augustine wrote to the monks of Hadrumentum in North Africa and Lerins in southern Gaul. The monks were disturbed by Augustine's stance on predestination, grace and free will and wondered if the monastic life served any purpose since everything was predestined. Augustine sets out to counter these charges and address their concerns around the year 427 A.D.
This is a translation of Augustine's "Marriage and Desire," "Answer to the Two Letters of the Pelagians," and his famous "Answer to Julian." The book is worth the price for the "Answer to Julian" alone. This is Augustine at his anti-Pelagian best around the year 420 A.D. His positions towards Pelagianism are beginning to harden, but he has not yet reached the still harder position he adopts in his "Opus Imperfectum to Julian" that is also published by New City Press in this series.
This is the first of four volumes published by New City Press that cover Augustine's Anti-Pelagian works . This volume contains the introductory works of the conflict and the translations are an improvement on the Victorian English of older translations. Not only are these excellent and highly readable translations, but for Augustine's epistle, "On the Spirit and the Letter," alone this work is worth having.
