First this book does have good points about it. It is a good look at the James Bond phenomenon, but it only goes up to the early 80's. It was very detailed in the approach to James Bond, but it also was a biography of Ian Fleming, which is ok except that it takes up about a third of the total book. Now I was interested in this bio, but I was really wanting to read more on the character, James Bond. It is a fairly good reference book that could have been better. I felt that the way to tell about the books and films would be to do the book then the movie pointing out the differences between the two. Also very little was done with the characters as to who played who yes there were the major characters you are told about, but some of the others are just characters without faces. This review is probably a little disjointed, but so was this book. A final couple of thought on this book: one, none of the Bond movies after Timothy Dalton are mentioned in the book so it is not a complete book on Bond. Two the books that were written by John Gardner is an incomplete list it have been nice that a revised version would have covered all movies and books. As I said it is a nice reference book just don't expect to read it in one sitting.
A reissue of the Eighties know-all book about everything Bond. While it thoroughly covers all the Bond films through the Dalton era, the book's main appeal for me was it's coverage of the original stories and novels, as well as detailed material on Fleming and his creation. It reminded me once more of how good a writer Fleming was and how unique his creation. One unexpected outcome of this book was to motivate me to once again 're-read all the books in order, something I have not done since the late Sixties. A delightful book and well worth the time of any Fleming and 007 fan.
It's unfortunate that no one has undertaken a similar look at the Bond phenomenon since Benson's seminal work here. Though the book hasn't been updated since the '80s, The James Bond Bedside Companion includes more than just capsule reviews of the 007 films and novels by Fleming, Amis, and Gardner, but instead digs deep into Bond history and contains many never, or at least rarely, seen commentary from Fleming's contemporaries and friends regarding the creation and development of the character, goes into a fair amount of detail regarding the relationship between the books and the films, and gives the reader something more than just a bird's eye view of everyone's favorite British agent.Mr. Benson's love of the character comes through each page of the book, and provides a wealth of information to longstanding fans of 007 and those new to James Bond. This book could inspire someone only familiar with the Bond movies to explore the literary character in greater depth, generating a new appreciation for the source material and also providing fans with something rewarding to occupy themselves between films.
This book is excellent for filling in the gaps of your knowledge of James Bond and Ian Fleming.It begins with a background of Ian Fleming and how he created the idea for James Bond. Mr. Benson then moves to his family life and where he wrote many of the novels in his Shangri-La.This book is complete and accurate (as of the publishing date).
I read Raymond Benson's James Bond Bedside Companion as a teenager and have been a huge James Bond fan ever since! When I saw this on Kindle for under $5, how could I refuse? This is the most informative book you will ever find on the subject of James Bond. Not only do you get a complete listing of the novels and films (up to a certain point -- the time the book was written), but you also find out all sorts of interesting trivia including James Bond's recipe for delicious, buttery scrambled eggs! MMMmmmm, Yummy!
I was utterly surprised when beginning this book. I have learned so many things i did not know. This is very entertaining and I have spent hours reading it already. All the personal details, and tidbits help me enjoy the movies and books even more.
Although dated, this excellent commentary of all things 007 (up until the early 1980s) is essential reading for all true Bond fans. This book, along with Steven Jay Rubin's authoritative The James Bond Films paved the way for all Bond-related books since. Indispensable!
Absolutely adore this labor of love by Bond canon writer Benson. His appreciation of Fleming and of the movie bond come through and his criticism is both thoughtful and thorough. A real must book for a true Bond fan.
