From the Back Cover
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "How to improve financial regulation and reduce the federal budget deficit, all in one fell swoop? Fire the SEC. Hire Harry Markopolos." James Grant, Grant's Interest Rate Observer Praise for the New York Times bestselling… USA Today bestselling… Wall Street Journal bestselling… NO ONE WOULD LISTEN "Harry Markopolos is a hero . . . The silver lining in the Madoff collapse, if there could be such a thing, is that for at least one moment in time, the SEC has been exposed. And for his role in making that happen, Harry Markopolos deserves all of our thanks." From the Foreword by David Einhorn, President and founder, Greenlight Capital, author of Fooling Some of the People All of the Time "Reading Markopolos's fascinating account of his relentless pursuit of the man behind the world's largest fraud scheme, I could not help but marvel at the resemblance to my own story. Both Markopolos and I were by turns dogged, shocked, frustrated and treated like pariahs. . . . his account is a salutary tale and the detailed regulatory lessons offered in the epilogue deserve attention. Let us hope, this time, he gets it." Sherron Watkins, The Enron Whistleblower, as reviewed in the Financial Times "No One Would Listen shows what it was like to see flames when most people did not. On five separate occasions starting in 2000, Mr. Markopolos made submissions to the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) about Mr. Madoff. His most detailed report, in 2005, outlined 30 reasons to suspect Mr. Madoff of being a fraud. The SEC's failure to follow up properly was horribly costly. The frustration of the outsider could not be better expressed." The Economist For additional information and resources, visit www.noonewouldlisten.com

As a fan of Michael Lewis and his financial non-fiction, I gave Markopolos a try. He is no Mchael Lewis, even with subject matter that is just as good and a ghostwriter. As Harry would say, because he is a fan of metaphorical hyperbole, "as a writer, he wouldn't be allowed to stencil Michael Lewis' laptop case."Since Harry includes a verbatim copy of what he sent to the SEC in 2005, you can see why the SEC staff didn't take him seriously - he is pompous and verbose and mixes factual realities with strange claims that border on paranoia. He actually does slip over into paranoia a few times, describing his supposed likelihood of being harmed (he carried a weapon, apparently for years) for what he knew even after what he knew had been published and shared with others.Ah, but the subject matter. Such juicy, real, important subject matter. How Bernie Madoff created the biggest hedge fund in the world, and maintained it as a Ponzi scheme for 20+ years. Doing it where everyone including Harry could see it. And,in fact, no one would listen. I think Harry does capture the incredible seduction that this financial scheme had and the simplicity of the smoke screen that Madoff used. I was also intrigued by the separation of the people who fell for it and those who did not. For example, Goldman and Morgan had no money in this, the best performing fund in the world. So I read every word and appreciated them. And wished that his 80 page diatribe against the SEC had been edited to two paragraphs. The entire book would have made a great Atlantic long-form article. Kudos to Harry for writing it. If you like the subject matter and can filter the attitude, there is no substitute for this kind of first-hand account.
Markopolos injects humor, hyperbole and original metaphors throughout, which makes a story that otherwise could be too dry for a non-quant to enjoy. There are numbers, charts and graphs in the Appendix if you really want specifics but the dialogues and random thoughts are the heart of the book and should appeal to any reader who wonders the who, what, why and how of Bernie Madoff. The story is well-written, at times self-deprecating and self-probing. If you missed it when it happened, you can Google the author's name and see the 60 Minutes interview with Steve Kroft and get a better feel for the book before you read it.The author's style rivals Michael Lewis for occasional off-the-wall observations though Lewis is still the top story teller; remember that Harry M. is a numbers guy, not a literary guy. Too bad high school social studies textbooks aren't written with the humor of this book; it would make all the kings and queens, villains and heroes a lot more vivid and interesting. There is valid social commentary rampant in the book which you won't have to look hard to find. The book is a good read; you probably will have a hard time putting it down once you start. Enjoy!
Bernie Madoff, the world's greatest Ponzi scammer, should be studied by everyone to see the depths of evil into which man can plunge. Madoff was a thoroughly charming and trust-inspiring person, with whom hundreds of people trusted $50 billion dollars over a 2-decade period, and lost everything! It is incredible that the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) never suspected his incredible fraud, and never even audited his operations. A few brilliant people like Harry Markopolos recognized the Ponzi scheme immediately, but the authorities did not listen to Markopolos until Madoff went bust in 2008 and turned himself in. Harry Markopolos is a true American hero for pursuing Madoff for 10 years while getting no reward for himself!
A very interesting book. I will say this, I'm not a financially astute person and thus many of the terms used in the book such as "split-strike conversion strategy" and "front running strategy" were new to me and I kept having to go back to the explanation of these trading strategies and also went onto Google to further research their meaning in order to understand various sections of the book. None the less it was interesting to read about the size of the Madof Ponzi scheme and the ineptitude of the SEC that allowed the scheme to carry on for a long period of time even though there were many people that actually new what Madof was doing. Harry Markopolos is one smart cookie.
