Interestingly, this book kept reminding me of the "look for the helpers" quote by Mr. Rogers. Maureen's experience was incredible, her treatments fascinating, her perseverance commendable, and her much-better-than-expected recovery worthy of much celebration. I was most affected, however, by the amazing level of support she received from friends and family. Maureen's strong work ethic and determination were obvious, but I often found myself thinking, "What do stroke victims (and other folks with TBI's) do when they don't have someone to _________ (fill in the blank with everything from helping her get to the hospital to moving her out of her apartment, to caring for her cat, to taking her in and caring for her after rehab, etc.). When I began reading this book, I was excited to get some insight on the perspective of someone completely aware, but "locked" in his or her mind by such an injury. I definitely got that, but a bonus was developing a better understanding for the incredible need of a supportive network for these individuals...oh, and really good health insurance coverage - that's another thing that's REALLY helpful to have when an unexpected tragedy strikes! Aside from all of that, I thoroughly enjoyed Maureen's sense of humor (that I'm sure also played a huge role in her recovery) and the pictures and various other "snapshots" of her recovery. All together, it was an attention-grabbing, comprehensive, touching recounting of an incredible journey. Thank you for sharing, Maureen! :)

I have never met Maureen. I bought this book because I wanted to see what it was like to recover from a stroke. I was not disappointed. I was amazed at Maureen's spirit throughout what must have been an awful ordeal. I admired her perseverance in relearning all the skills she had lost. Her humor in the face of all this impressed me, as well. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because in my ebook edition the illustrations were too small to see, and those illustrations told a substantial part of the story. I would recommend people get the book in paper. I was finally able to see the illustrations by looking at them on my iMac, but I don't like to have to sit at the computer to read books. I guess I should be grateful that I'm able to read at all after seeing how hard it was for Maureen to learn this skill all over again. Kudos to you, Maureen. I'm still rooting for you.

I was going to be as quirky with my review of this book as the story was, but, I won’t. This story is so serious that I must treat my review with some seriousness. Maureen is a very courageous woman, who suffered a devastating stroke and lived to tell about it.I believe that her fighting spirit, and of course her family, contributed in helping her to survive and strive. This book is a legacy of her struggles and the proof of her determination in overcoming her tragedy.I laughed with her as she tried to make light the tragedy that was looking at all who observed, as the end of her life. I even saw some of the typing errors as that part of her that couldn’t read, or spell correctly. I grabbed my amplifier to try and read some of those very small prints, and in all of this, I was in awe at how much she fought to return to normal. This is a great story of survival. There is a lot to learn from it.Maureen’s stroke just didn’t happen. It gave ample warnings. That is the first lesson to learn. When things we haven’t experienced before begin to happen to us, it is time to take those warnings seriously and get help. Who knows what could have happened if Maureen did.

What a Wild Ride! What a Journey and what a Book! It's honest, funny, hard, and so very real! I'm an Occupational Therapist and understand how terrifying it must feel to watch yourself unravel in real time from the inside out, powerless to stop your own derailing neurological train! I appreciate the details and examples of Maureen's struggle. She includes pictures, sketches, charts and exercises; these might not be of great interest to readers without a medical background, but they were to me. It's such a harrowing struggle to regain what you shouldn't have lost and a such a young age. Kudos to you Maureen!

Courageously written, and shockingly honest and raw, the reader gets to experience through the author’s words what it’s like to have a stroke and go through the long process of recovery. Touching, powerful, and real, this story is very moving and filled with insights and tender moments. The author also includes many links and helpful information for anyone who needs similar support and further information. I just wish that some of the images of reports, writings, and various samples, were a bit bigger – they were too small for me to read. But that did not take away from the story, which was very powerful and made a big impact. I thank the author for sharing this story.

After I read "My Stroke of Insight" I thought I knew everything important about having a stroke. Not so.Maureen's account is far more personal and written from the perspective of the patient. She gives us an unflinching image of what it means to have and recuperate from a major brain injury. One of her friends referred to her soon after the stroke as "brave." I understand why Maureen disagrees with this notion: bravery would be voluntarily being afflicted with a stroke, something few of us would do. Instead, I see remarkable resilience and persistence in the face of circumstance. Many stroke victims would have accepted some less-than-100-percent degree of recovery, rather than continuing to strive for full recovery.Make no mistake, however. Maureen is lucky to have been blessed with friends and family nearby who were able to support her efforts. And she was very smart to have selected robust health insurance coverage, although she was only 32 when given the choice, just six months before her stroke. Thousands of Americans don't have the options that made possible Maureen's return to good health.
