Pros:"Where Shabbat Lives" is one of the better Jewish board books I've encountered, so far. The illustrations are its strongest quality--and it manages to capture many different aspects of the Shabbat experience, and its meaning. This redheaded family appears warm and inviting.Cons:Like so many books I've seen from Kar-Ben, there is no attempt at a rhyme scheme (except the last page, for some reason). This fact makes the reading experience less enjoyable for me as a parent, and I think it may be one of the reasons he prefers to look at the pictures himself instead of having it read to him.
I like the Sammy Spider's First Shabbat a lot because it teaches the children about Shabbat and even has a recipe for challah bread in it. This one is ok, maybe it's better for very young children who don't comprehend much yet, but every page reads like "in our candles in our bread, this is where Shabbat lives." It's a cute book to read on Sabbath but there are better books out there.
This is a nice little board book with bright, simple illustrations and basic text, explaining to pre-preschoolers the essential idea that the joyous Day of Rest exists in everything we do and everything we use to celebrate it. This is a great book to introduce very young Jewish children to the idea and the doings of Shabbat.
I bought this for my one year old granddaughter. and I was very disappointed with this book. There is nothing there and I regret having purchased it. I would look for a better book covering the same subject.
Great board book for kids under 2. They can flip through and see where Shabbat lives. Was hoping for a little more detail about what Shabbat was. That's why I would recommend for younger kiddos.
Again another one that teaches NOTHING!!! Why do people write untrue reviews? Shabbat lives in nice clothes people wear to temple??Please... Maybe I can return this horrible books.
I would recommend this book for very young children only. It seems a little too young for my 2 year old...there isn't really a story to it and it contains very little.
Here is another harmless board book for little hands to hold and for little heads to hopefully hold the ideas communicated. Through poetic language and repetition of the main idea, the book nicely explains that "Shabbat" lives everywhere: at the Sabbath table, at the synagogue observance, in the home and out in the world. Pleasant pictures capture the symbols of the holiday and the customs of the people who celebrate it with family and friends. This book is fine for children 2 to 4 years old who use books hard and often rip regular paper pages in their zeal for "reading". Reviewed by Ellen Cole
