Just finished the book and was glad to have bought it! History is and eventual telling of the facts and Neville has done it. this is a very needed update because the movie has it's Hollywood stamp but the truth is just as exciting! Love the breakdowns and the interviews of the real deal. the AARs of the action lead to many positive changes to run future operations. I still love it that COL. Steele refuses to acknowledge the action! I met him in Bosnia when his infantry Battalion relieved my cav squadron near Tuzla. To spoof the new guys they would hand them a copy of Blackhawk down and get them to as Steele to autograph it and he would throw it against the wall!! He is a big football lineman from U of GA and had that classic "Ranger" mentality!! We calmed things down in Tuzla and patrols went out in soft caps and slung weapons with heavy stuff hidden in the vehicles. He would IMT in full battle rattle and the locals asked if they were invaded!! He tried to fire all the females working at Camp McGovern! He is a real cement head with a high squeaky voice like Patton!! No wonder they spelt his name wrong and has some small actor play him in the movie! He refused to be interviewed for the update!! Petty person!! If you do reading on Mogadishu, you need this book!!
Twenty five years after the battle and so much more is coming out. As great as the "Blackhawk Down" book was, this one builds on it, and then takes things several steps further. If you enjoy reading an account that has an enormous amount of details, then you will appreciate this one. The specifics are equivalent to "Not A good Day To Die" by Sean Naylor. Multiple statements were included on a particular event, in order to confirm the accuracy. It is amazing that the author was able to get access to soldiers that do not normally speak on the record. I also liked how he noted the differences between the movie and the reality.
After this battle Bill' Chicken "Clinton and' Looney" Lou Aspin should both have been made to face an inquiry as to why the force size was cut drastically, no armored support of our own not the yellow foreign group who were to afraid to come out and help. Mark Bowden's version is good, but this goes a lot deeper into the whole operation. Read It!
I truly enjoyed this book. Interesting history that is carefully researched and wonderfully written. The author has a measured grasp of the roles of different special forces--Rangers, Delta, Nightstalker (SOAR), SEALs, and Airforce Special Tactics--and was able to interview key personnel that results in the most thorough account of ground-level action yet. Many lessons were learned from Task Force Ranger, but this book does much more than record important military history; it made me feel like I was there.
Have only started listening to this audio book because it will only boot up in a computer. I tried it in my car and with a portable CD player and neither worked. The car CD player said it was a "data file", the portable players I tried it on seemed to be running it but neither produced any sound. There is something awry with the formatting of the CD, I think. Other than this issue I'm expecitng it to be an excellent book. I'll update my review after I've listened to it.
I’m very impressed with the depth and breadth of this important work. The author has good contacts in the Special Operations community and he used this to great avail. This is not an easy book to read if one is a critical thinker as I frequently had to stop reading to research various things such as references. I’m bummed that I’m finished this book. I was that good
The appendixes are the best part of this ebook, the explanation of the movie versus real life is very helpful. This action occurred after I had retired from USMC so books and the movie are my only sources.
Not as engaging as Black Hawk Down but more informative and retrospective discussion of the now legendary battle that served as a wake up call to the American military on how to train their special ops soldiers in the future.
