How does this useful book not have a review yet?Myself, I'm very biography or story-driven, so the first two parts had more automatic appeal. I knew nothing about Franco before reading this - except when he would appear as a character in the story of WWII, much to the exasperation of Hitler. Although Franco certainly had his imperialist designs, he was no Mussolini - he was attracted to the guaranteed win, a quality this book makes clear in the way he ran his side of the civil war.The third part of the book is also useful but gets a qualified endorsement. You might get a little annoyed by the repetition of quoted material you have already seen, but perhaps that is necessary here. More importantly, the topics of this section really needed headers, or so it seemed to me, since they are analytical rather than being part of a narrative flow.There are useful questions in this third section for the layman to ponder: was the Franco regime actually "fascist"? And how to usefully divide historical eras into periods for analysis.The book is relatively short, which is refreshing, but also the reason why some aspects do not get the extended treatment you might be looking for. Overall, a comprehensive start for those new to Franco.
