Review
"This slim, elegant reference work from Atherley (Knit Mitts), lead technical editor for Knitty magazine, is a combination dictionary of knitting terms and introduction to knitting tools and techniques.... Unlike many knitting books, the diagrams and drawings included here are clearly drawn and easy to decipher...a go-to reference in any knitting library." --Publishers Weekly, Starred Review "The Knitter's Dictionary is my current ideal choice to keep at my side (err.. in my knitting bag) for all those unsure moments when it comes to this craft." --Connected2Christ

What a disappointment--from Interweave Press, of all publishers! THE KNITTER’S DICTIONARY: KNITTING KNOW-HOW FROM A TO Z is a small, handbook-sized dictionary of knitting terms that has mediocre-to-poor definitions. It's spottily illustrated with line drawings, but all it really does is define specialized terms that you may encounter in knitting patterns or magazines. It's far from a solid knitting-bag reference, such as Vicki Square’s classic Knitter’s Companion (which defines many of the same terms). For example, in this book the un-illustrated definition of “combination knitting†reads: “A variation of Continental-style knitting. Yarn is wrapped the other way around for the purl stitch so that the stitches are mounted left leg forward on the needle. Knit stitches are then worked through the back loop. …†There is an illustration for “purling Continental-styleâ€, and another for “knitting through the back loopâ€, but they don't really help me to visualize combination knitting. I know what “the other way around†means, but I wouldn't know if I needed a definition of this term.As another example, “needle gauge†is defined--without an illustration--as “Tool for measuring the size of a needle.†(That's really helpful.) Or look at the entry for “hat stylesâ€, which has useful illustrations with useless definitions. “Beanie†is defined as “A style of hat, close-fitted to the headâ€; “toque†is defined as “Common Canadian usage, a fitted hat like a beanie. May or may not have a pom-pom.†(Is there any difference?)This un-illustrated definition, for “Cowichan, curling sweater†falls into the “why bother?†category. It reads: “These are both styles of a heavy knit jacket, typically worked in very thick yarn, featuring a shawl collar and intarsia colorwork designs. This style of garment originated in indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest; the garment known as curling or Mary Maxim sweaters borrow the basic concept for fashion.†I know what a Cowichan sweater looks like, but have never heard of a “Mary Maxim sweaterâ€. I’m familiar with the Mary Maxim crafts catalog, but am consumed by curiosity about what a Cowichan-inspired, fashionable “Mary Maxim sweater†might look like. This is a knitting book that didn't need to be published. There are many far better knitting references already available.
I looked at the hardcopy version, and then compared that to the sample of the kindle version. The kindle version displays the illustrations perfectly, and I would rather have this on my phone/tablet for easy reference while knitting. I bought the kindle version. Searching the kindle version is perfect for quick access to a term that has gone out of your memory or is new. For new to intermediate knitters, this is a perfect aid. Experienced knitters will find it a useful refresher.Example of content: The discussion of YarnOvers is complete - "between knit stitches," "after a purl, before a knit, "after a knit, before a purl," "between purl stitches," and "multiple yarnovers." Blocking tools and methods are included. Chart reading and common chart symbols are included. It is a complete pocket reference, A to Z!The recommended reading at the end of the book is good, and recommends some of my favorite in depth references.
Kate is a mastermind! As a long-time knitter, I adore this reference as I teach (umm, enable) this amazing craft. Kate’s books are full of years of experience. I wish I could spend a day in her brain! The illustrations are spot on, and her wisdom is rock solid. Just buy and enjoy!
Love the book, it's small enough to keep in my knitting bag so I have answers always at hand.
This lovely book is a knitting dictionary. It provides knitting information in a concise format. I love this book and keep it in my project bag always. It's a great tool!
Great book all knitters should have this
I love this little book! It is the perfect size for portability. There are appealing illustrations and thorough definitions. I bought one for me and one as a gift. I would certainly recommend it as a great gift option for the knitter you love.
This is a small sized hard cover book with 126 high-quality glossy pages. Illustrations are only in black line drawings. This type of paper would take her color photograph well, it’s a shame. I have too many complaints, one is that the fan is very small so people over 40 will probably have trouble reading this. My other issue is that this attempts to explain some of the stitching procedures and for me it is very hard to follow text descriptions for needing so I just use free videos on the Internet where I can watch it and understand and then I can re-watch it as many times as necessary or pause and restart. Author Kate Atherley Has put a lot of information here it is a good reference for the shelf but you have to be a book person. Even some of the biggest bookworms are getting used to using the Internet were dictionary to look up’s and needing quick clarifications or stage directions. This is every word about knitting, this is not like a stitch dictionary. Best for a new knitter book lover with great eyesight. Rating 3 stars = It’s Okay.
