These stories are like delicious bonus tracks in the Crown Duel album. Each of them stands alone pretty well, but they also enhance the texture and awesomeness of the main story.Beauty is about growing up and not being what you are expected to be, which is a message I can always get behind.Court Ship is awesome. I thought it was adroitly handled as a story of lost-and-found love. The foreign princess does not come off well, but not as badly as she might have. I loved that Granny Risa is so smart about taking your chances when you have them, and not talking yourself out of something that might be good.Read if: You have loved other Sherwood Smith stories, you like a glimpse into the world.Skip if: You are looking for instant chemistry and happily-ever-after for sure.

I really did love the stories in this novella and I really love Sherwood Smith's writing. I was so glad to read more about Vidanric and Mel and their children. My favorite of the two stories was the first one titled, "Beauty". I actually really enjoyed seeing all the characters again, even the one that comes back in this story. I also loved Raec. He is so much like his father except he hasn't quite got as much of a mask going on as Vidanric. Or it might have felt that way because his story was told in third person and we could get more than just a single character's take on the events at hand. I knew Vidanric would make an amazing dad and I absolutely loved the relationship between him and his daughter Elestra.Sherwood Smith does an amazing job doing her world building and telling us what has happened a bit since the end of Crown Duel. You even learn about what happened to Prince Alaerec and where he got his injury from. It was great learning a bit more about his character. He was one of the many characters that I wanted to know so much more about from Crown Duel and learning that bit about his past really made his character stand out and more 3-dimensional.My only problem with Remalna's Children, and why I rated it at 4 instead of 5, it's more like 4.5 stars actually, is that the stories just seemed to end. I was really disappointed that I didn't get to see more of what happened and would love to have continued reading about both Raec's and Elestra's adventures. I would have also loved to meet their sister, who didn't really appear in the stories, she was only just mentioned. Maybe we will see more from this someday. That would really make me happy!

I read my copy of Court Duel until the spine wore out, so I was very excited to find more in this world. I loved the first short, Beauty, with everything I've got. A redeemable villain is my favorite kind of hero. The second story was a little more open-ended than I would like, so I really hope there is more coming for these. I am very engaged with the characters and want to know what happens next.

I really enjoyed these stories for the followup of events that occurred twenty years prior in Crown Duel and Court Duel. (Amazon has both available in one volume entitled "Crown Duel".) I wish for a longer visit to Remalna, Danric, Mel, Savona, etc. This is a nice way to see a snapshot of how things have gone and some of what the beloved characters lived through. It's good writing. The stories can stand alone, but much of the meaning is lost without reading Crown Duel. It might be interesting to read how everything ends, as these stories illustrate, and then go back and read how they began. A Stranger to Command (Danric's story) is a must. I don't know what order to recommend reading these in because each will influence understanding and perspective so much!

I was IN LOVE with Sherwood's story 'Beauty', particularly. I love the world of Remalna and I especially loved that she reintroduced her character, Flauvic (from her previous novel 'Court Duel'). Flauvic has always held a special place in my heart--as one of my favorite, and handsome, villians. It was nice to witness a more 'human' side to Flauvic's character. I only wished, that I could have read more about Elestra's and Flauvic's story. It went unfinished. Elestra is a beautiful girl, who doesn't think she's beautiful; few bother to appreciate her, and so she goes on with life thinking she is 'ugly'. I loved her sense of humor and strong spirit. Just like her mother, she is a tough girl who isn't afraid of putting up a 'good fight'. And Flauvic just felt like such a perfect match for her. Just as beautiful, and even more misunderstood. I would have loved to see a romance blossom between the two characters.

These short stories read like teasers to longer novels. If that is the case, I would have just waited before buying. The stories don't really reveal all that much insight into characters, though they do have some good action. The first story confused me as the author (SPOILER ALERT)seems to have mixed feelings about her villain from a previous book, casting him in a much softer light this time around. Apparently he had a sudden change of heart and upon regaining his human form is a good guy now? I guess he was just too good looking to leave as a tree. At any rate, I don't really think that these stories are worth buying.

My only complaint about Remalna's Children is that it is 2 short stories vs. novels. They are wonderfully written and will bring the reader right back into Crown Duel. Just as the action heats up for both stories it is abrutly brought to a hault. I'm only hoping this is forshadowing and that Ms. Smith will be writting more about them in the future. Overall a great read!

The only problem I have is that they are too short. I loved the stories and wish I could read more.
